One of the main experiences Cuca provides is our very special Cocktail and Garden Lounge. The restaurant is being built in a gorgeous coconut grove and we want to offer guests a chilled out space to let the hours pass by while sipping our cocktails, sharing our tapas or indulging in our desserts.
While we discuss with our architect the material and location of the islands we want to build among the grass and the coconut trees to host the seats, we also had to find the perfect furniture to fit in this very special environment. As I mentioned in my previous post, we finally found the right supplier and this week we finalized the design, material and colors for both the furniture and the cushions.
We knew that synthetic rattan was our only option as the heat and the proximity of the sea would damage any other material; but what about the design? There are dozens of suppliers in Bali but all of them have practically the same models: very square and rigid. We wanted something that feels super comfy, more organic and natural and that was not that easy to find… After finding someone capable to make it, we went into the bargaining phase that eventually took us to a comfortable agreement. Next step: the color of the rattan, that we chose based entirely on our surroundings, the dark wood color of the coconut trees.
And final decision: the cushions. This is where we became dumbfounded. We were compelled to decide between two options: go for a canvas material that is cheap but under the strength of this sun would discolor in only weeks and when exposed to this extreme humidity would inevitably mold… or choose Sunbrella. If we are talking about a loveseat, a back and seat cushion with two small pillows… we are talking about three times the price of the loveseat! Unbelievable… it still hurts as I write. To make matters worse (or better, it depends on how you look at it), our interior designers unsurprisingly chose the most amazing patterns that in Sunbrella world translate as the most expensive ones. Now that is for sure, they are outstanding to look at and to seat on.

Una de las experiencias más relevantes que Cuca proporcionará es nuestra barra de Cócteles y terraza-jardín. El restaurante está situado en un precioso palmeral y queremos aprovecharlo para ofrecer a nuestros clientes un espacio donde relajarse y dejar pasar las horas disfrutando de un cóctel, compartiendo tapas o saboreando nuestros postres.
A la vez que decidíamos con nuestro arquitecto el material y la ubicación de las islas que queremos construir por el césped y entre los cocoteros y en las que situaremos los asientos y las mesas de la terraza, también teníamos que encontrar los muebles perfectos para este escenario tan especial. Como mencioné la semana pasada, por fin localizamos un proveedor y esta semana hemos concretado el diseño, el material y los colores tanto de los muebles como de los cojines.
Sabíamos que nuestra única opción para los muebles era ratán sintético porque el calor y la proximidad al mar dañarían cualquier otro material; ¿pero y el diseño? Hay docenas de proveedores en Bali pero todos tienen prácticamente los mismos modelos: muy cuadrados y rígidos. Nosotros queríamos algo que sea muy cómodo, más orgánico y natural, y eso no es nada fácil de encontrar… Cuando por fin descubrimos a alguien que podía hacerlo, entramos en la fase de negociación de precios que tras varios días concluyó en un acuerdo satisfactorio. El próximo paso: los cojines. Aquí es donde nos quedamos de piedra. Teníamos únicamente dos opciones: o una tela común para exteriores que es barata pero que bajo la potencia extrema de este sol se decoloraría en cuestión de semanas y que expuesta a esta humedad extrema inevitablemente se llenaría de moho… o elegir Sunbrella. Si nunca habéis oído hablar de esta marca, bienvenidos al universo de la tela de más alta calidad y comodidad del mundo, el Ferrari de los cojines. Es tan, tan excepcional que ofrece 5 años de garantía. ¿Os podéis imaginar un mero cojín expuesto al sol y la lluvia, la suciedad y el agua del mar con una garantía de 5 años? Es una locura; como su precio... Dos almohadas cuestan lo mismo que un sillón entero. Si hablamos de un sofá para dos personas necesitaríamos las almohadas del asiento y de la espalda y dos cojines pequeños… Y entonces estamos hablando de ¡tres veces el precio del sofá entero! Es increíble y todavía me duele al escribirlo. Para empeorar las cosas (o mejorarlas, depende de cómo se mire), nuestros diseñadores como siempre eligieron los estampados más bonitos de la gama, que en el mundo de Sunbrella significan los más caros. Eso sí, son un festival para los ojos y un lujo cuando te sientas en ellos.
Resumiendo: ahora somos orgullosos dueños arruinados de una terraza-jardín increíble… preciosa e irresistiblemente acogedora. ¡Así que coged vuestras agendas y a reservar vuestra cena en Cuca!
